Seemandhra polling 76 per cent voter turnout for 25 Lok Sabha seats

Over 76 per cent polling was recorded to 175 Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in Seemandhra on Wednesday.

Braving the scorching heat, voters of Seemandhra turned out in large numbers to exercise the franchise for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections on Wednesday even as sporadic violence and clashes between YSR Congress and TDP-BJP workers were reported from some areas especially Kadapa.

The state's Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal said the overall polling percentage in 13 districts of Seemandhra where elections were held for 25 Lok Sabha and 175 Assembly constituencies was an impressive 77-78 per cent, as per the tentative figures, with Guntur recording the highest 83 per cent and Visakhapatnam the lowest at 73 per cent. In 2009, Seemandhra had recorded 76 per cent turnout.

Clashes between TDP and YSRCP workers, and some violence by Maoists were reported during the day. The Maoists torched an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and a vehicle at Palakagidi agency area (on Andhra-Odisha border) of Visakhapatnam district, forcing authorities to order repolling in one of the polling stations.

Several workers of YSR Congress and TDP were injured in clashes in Kadapa district. Police fired in the air in Guntur and Kadapa districts to disperse the workers.

About Rs 8 crore in unaccounted-for cash was seized during the day, which took the total cash seized so far to Rs 152 crore since the model code of conduct came into force across Andhra Pradesh.

Having been out of power for a decade, today's elections were a do-or-die battle for TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, who has forged an electoral alliance with BJP. His main rival is YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Today's elections, the last general election to be held in the undivided Andhra Pradesh, were conducted amid a heavy security.

Elections in Telangana, which is to become the 29th state of the country, were held on April 30.

"In East Godavari district, one person died due to cardiac arrest and not in the clashes; another voter died near a polling station due to sun stroke and heavy consumption of liquor at Niziveedu in Krishna district," Bhanwar Lal said.

Andhra Pradesh Votes Tomorrow for 25 Lok Sabha 175 Assembly Seats

People of Andhra Pradesh will be deciding their own fate - vis-a-vis the new state when they vote to elect 25 members of Lok Sabha and 175 of the Assembly tomorrow.

Over 3.67 crore voters get to exercise their franchise to choose their representatives from among 333 candidates in fray for Lok Sabha and 2241 for Assembly.

The elections are critical for the state, which gets formally truncated on June 2, as much as for the main political parties that are engaged in a no-holds-barred fight to clinch power with the promise of re-writing the fortunes of everyone.

The stakes are very high as these elections are a do-or-die battle for Telugu Desam Party and possibly a now-or-never chance for Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress (YSRC).

That the Congress, which ruled the state since 2004, is not even being counted as a contender in the elections is probably the biggest irony.

Though a new political player has emerged in the form of Jai Samaikyaandhra Party, it could end up only as an "also ran" with no relevance whatsoever.

Having been relegated to the opposition for ten years, after being in power for a nine-and-a-half-year period preceding that, the TDP is now surely battling for its political existence.

Having been set up with the sole objective of seizing power, the YSRC ostensibly cannot afford to miss the occasion now. The strong anti-corruption sentiment among people is coming to haunt the YSRC as its chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and many of its leaders are facing massive charges of corruption.

Post-bifurcation, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu is being looked upon as the only leader who could "undo the injustice" and ensure rapid development of the residual state, given his experience as the Chief Minister earlier.

A lot of water has flown in the state politics in the last couple of years, more so in the last nine months, where the YSRC has lost much of its steam.

The TDP, on the other hand, saw a revival in its fortunes particularly in the last one year and its realignment with the Bharatiya Janata Party only brightened its prospects, at the cost of the YSRC.

The TDP is confident that the "Modi wave" will work to its advantage even in the Assembly election.

The "anti-corruption" mood prevalent among the public in the last couple of years has obviously dampened, if not completely damaged, Jagan and his YSRC's prospects.

Jagan's loss was TDP's gain as it emerged as the only viable alternative to the Congress. However, Elections-2014 will be "forgettable" for the Congress as it is hit strongly not only by anti-incumbency but also by the state's bifurcation.

The Congress became the chief villain in the bifurcation saga and consequently stood on the verge of extinction in Seemaandhra.

Caste always played a notable role in electoral politics in AP but the perceived "polarization" actually did not happen.

The YSRC, which was supposed to be the biggest gainer of the caste matrix, might suffer a dent as certain caste and religious groups moved away from it.

The TDP is banking mainly on the backward classes, apart from its traditional support groups (Kamma) besides the Kapus.

By joining hands with the BJP, the TDP may have to forgo the Muslim votes but it is not so perturbed as it feels many other factors, including the "Modi wave", will otherwise help it.

ANI reports that 26.96 per cent electorate in the Telangana region had exercised their right to cast votes by 12 noon.

11:00 am: Brisk polling in initial hours

Brisk polling was reported in parts of Telangana in the initial hours of election today.

Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal told reporters that "by 9 am, 15.3 per cent voters had cast their ballots. The polling is going on peacefully at all the polling stations."

Lal said Mahabubnagar district recorded the highest percentage of 17.1 in the first two hours while Hyderabad recorded lowest 10.4 per cent voter turnout among the 10 districts where polling is going on.

Among the early voters were Union Minister and AP Congress Campaign Committee chairman K Chiranjeevi, film actors Pawan Kalyan, Nagarjuna, Venkatesh and Nandamuri Balakrishna, badminton star Saina Nehwal and DGP B Prasada Rao.

10:30 am: Technical snag in EVMs delays polling

Technical snag in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) led to delay in start of the polling at some polling centres.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bhanwarlal told reporters that some EVMs received from Electronic Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), Hyderabad were in factory mode and the polling staff was unable to use them.

He, however, said such EVMs were being replaced in 20 minutes to half-an-hour as every district has 2,000 EVMs in reserve.

"There is a small technical snag in new EVMs. They are in factory mode and they have to be sent back to the factory but we have sufficient number of machines for immediate replacement," he said.

The election authorities are using 100,000 EVMs. The CEO said these were new machines which arrived two days ago from ECIL and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

10:00 am: Voter tells Chiranjeevi to stand in queue

Indian politicians' VIP mindset was on display again on Wednesday when Congress leader Chiranjeevi tried to jump the queue outside a polling booth in Andhra Pradesh.

Chiranjeevi, who had come to the polling booth to cast his vote, tried to enter the premises even though there were a number of people waiting in queue outside.

He was then asked by a voter standing in queue, as per ANI, “Do you need special treatment?”

Soon after, others waiting for their turn at the polling center applauded Kartik who told Chiranjeevi to go to the back of the line.

“I respect him, but he should follow the queue. He is not over 65 or disabled,” Kartik told reporters later.

“I never violate rules. I had just left the queue to see if my name is there in the voting list,” Chiranjeevi said in his defence, blaming the media for overreacting.

9:15 am: First-time voters enthusiastic about polling

Enthusiasm was writ large on people's faces as they queued up at polling stations since 7 am today to exercise their franchise.

A group of youngsters was the first to reach the polling station at City Central Library under Musheerabad Assembly constituency in Hyderabad to cast votes for the first time.

"It's thrilling," exclaimed Pratyusha, an engineering student, after she got her right index finger inked upon casting her first vote.

State Governor ESL Narasimhan and his spouse Vimala Narasimhan reached the Raj Nagar polling station at MS Maktha, opposite the Raj Bhavan, to cast their votes.

State Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal cast his vote at the polling station at IAS Officers Colony.

8:00 am: Polling underway in Telangana region

Weeks ahead of its planned bifurcation, Andhra Pradesh is holding the first phase of simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly Elections on Wednesday.

Polling is being held for 17 Lok Sabha seats and 119 state Assembly seats in the Telangana region today.

Among the key contestants on Parliamentary seats going to polls are Union Ministers S Jaipal Reddy, Sarve Satyanarayana and Balram Naik, Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief K Chandrasekhara Rao, Lok Satta Party chief Jayaprakash Narayan and Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi.

Leading candidates for Assembly constituencies include TRS chief Rao, Congress' Telangana unit president Ponnala Lakshmaiah, working president Uttam Kumar Reddy, former deputy chief minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, and former state ministers Geeta Reddy and D Sridhar Babu.

Polling is being held at 30,574 polling booths today, with 265 candidates in the fray for the Lok Sabha and 1,669 for the Assembly seats.

Over 28.17 million electors are eligible to exercise their franchise.

In three out of the 10 left-wing extremism-affected Assembly constituencies in the region, polling will be held till 4 pm while in the other seven it will conclude at 5 pm. In the remaining 109 segments, polling will end at 6 pm, according to the Chief Electoral Officer.

Four helicopters of the Indian Air Force have been stationed in districts for contingencies even as a strong posse of 90,000 police and para-military personnel has been deployed in ten districts of Telangana to oversee security.

Live: LS polls phase 7 voting till 11am; 46% in Bengal, 25% in Punjab, UP, Bihar; Gujarat 19%

seven states and two Union Territories recorded brisk polling in the 7th phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Wednesday but the most emphatic statement on democracy was made by a young voter who stopped Union minister Chiranjeevi from jumping the queue at a polling booth in Hyderabad.

BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi also provided some morning drama when he posted a 'selfie' holding a lotus -- the party poll symbol – after casting his vote in Ranip in Ahmedabad. The Twitter post drew howls of protest from the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Otherwise, it was business as usual with voters forming long queues in the last leg of the April polls to decide the fate of 1,295 candidates including Modi, contesting from Vadodara and Congress president Sonia Gandhi (in Rae Bareli).

Voters in West Bengal – a traditionally high voting state -- once again led the strong show with 45.84% exercising their franchise till 11am in the nine seats where polling is being held.

Voting is taking place in the state in the backdrop of a bitter war of words between the BJP and Trinamool, specially on the Saradha ponzi scam.

In Gujarat, where voting is being held in all 26 seats, over 15% polling was recorded till 10am.

Modi was among the early voters in his home state where the BJP is aiming for a clean sweep.

"I consider myself extremely blessed & fortunate to be a voter in Advaniji's Parliamentary Constituency. Urging all those voting in 89 Lok Sabha seats across India to vote in record numbers today! Hope my young friends show the way in doing so," Modi Tweeted before casting his vote.

Modi's mother Heeraben also cast her vote in Gandhinagar in the morning.

Advani, whose sudden wish to contest from Bhopal had caused some unease in the party, is a candidate for capital Gandhinagar. In the 2009 elections, the BJP had won 17 seats and the Congress nine.

In Bihar, as much as 25.93% polling was recorded in the seven seats going to the polls in the fourth phase of elections in the state.

TV reports said that polling at two booths in Begusarai had to be stopped after it was discovered that "wrong EVMs" had been sent there.

In the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh and Punjab, 14% of the voters had cast their votes till 9 am when reports last came in.

In Telangana, polling is being held for the first phase of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and the Andhra Pradesh assembly. Voting is being held in 17 Lok Sabha seats and 119 assembly seats.

In Uttar Pradesh, where polling is being held in 14 seats, the polling percentage till 11am was 24.78.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati -- trying to emerge as a king-maker or, perhaps, even the 'queen' -- was among the early voters in Lucknow.

However, BJP candidate from Jhansi Uma Bharti could not vote as she was down with high fever and severe throat infection. Bharti is a voter in Lucknow.

Amid tight security arrangements, polling in the 14 constituencies in central UP and Bundlekhand started at 7am.

Even before the polling started at 25,485 polling stations, people had queued up outside to exercise their franchise.

With the presidents of two national parties -- Sonia Gandhi (Congress) and Rajnath Singh (BJP) -- contesting from Rai Bareli and Lucknow respectively, the stakes are high for both the parties.

While Sonia Gandhi is seeking re-election for the third time from her traditional constituency, Rajnath Singh has laid claim on the legacy of BJP stalwart Atal Behari Vajpayee from Lucknow.

In Punjab, where polling is being held in all 13 seats on a single day, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers clashed in Moga village leaving 7 persons injured. Details were not available.

The polling percentage till 11am was 25 in the state.

One of the most keenly-watched contests in the state is in Amritsar between BJP leader Arun Jaitley and former Punjab chief minister and Congress candidate Capt Amarinder Singh.

The stakes are very high for the ruling SAD which has four seats and is locked in a bitter contest with Congress.

In Srinagar, however, only 13.53% votes had been cast till 11am.

The key Srinagar seat features Union minister and National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, father of chief minister Omar Abdullah.

A big fight erupted between the Abdullahs and Modi in the run-up to voting day over secularism and Article 370 (which grants special status to the state) of the Constitution. The BJP's stated position is it will scrap Article 370 if it comes to power.

Election authorities rescheduled the duration for polling in Srinagar from
7am to 5pm instead of 7am to 6pm.

Official sources said the decision was taken keeping in view the law and order problems that took place in Anantnag Lok Sabha seat which went to polls on April 24.

The fight in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is for one seat each. Both seats are with the BJP in the outgoing Lok Sabha.

In the seventh phase, nearly 140 million voters will have their say.

After phase 7, polling will end for 438 of the total 543 Lok Sabha seats, leaving 105 to be decided in two phases in May.

April 30, 2014 will be a big day for 2.81 crore voters in Telangana as they exercise their franchise for electing the first government of the new state that will formally come into existence on June 2.

Nearly 3 crore voters will choose from 1,669 candidates in 119 assembly states in the Telangana region. Voting is also taking place for 17 parliamentary seats.

The Congress, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the Telugu Desam Party-BJP combine have the highest stakes for power in what will be India's 29th state.

Though there are other players like YSR Congress, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, Aam Aadmi Party, Lok Satta Party, CPI and CPM in the fray, they have little at stake in the elections.

The electoral battle between the main contenders is so intense that picking a "favourite" is no easy task.

The general elections will be a close contest between the TRS and the Congress while the TDP-BJP combine is also expected to make certain gains.

More than anyone else, the elections are highly critical for the TRS as it will be a "now-or-never" chance for it to realise its ultimate target of achieving power in the new state.

Poll predictions suggest an impressive haul for the Telangana Rashtra Samiti or TRS led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, who fronted the campaign for statehood.

The Congress, which pushed for the creation of Telangana in Parliament, may end up being the biggest loser. The party failed to stitch up an alliance with the TRS, and now finds its thunder stolen by it.

Mr Rao, popularly known as KCR, refused to partner with the Congress, though he has not ruled out an alliance after the results on May 16. More than anyone else, this election is critical for the 60-year-old who, many say, has a fighting chance of becoming Telangana's the first Chief Minister.

Prominent among those seeking election to Lok Sabha are Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy, TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao, his daughter Kavitha, Lok Satta Party president N Jayaprakash Narayan, former DGP V Dinesh Reddy, former IAS officer M Chaya Ratan, CPI state secretary K Narayana and Majlis chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

The TRS head, whose ultimate dream is becoming the first Chief Minister of Telangana state, is also contesting the Assembly election (from Gajwel) while other aspirants like C Damodara Rajanarasimha (former Deputy CM), J Geeta Reddy (former minister) and a host of others too are in the fray.

It will certainly not be a cakewalk for the TRS in the elections to the new state Assembly as its clout is largely restricted to only some of the ten districts in the region and also the fact that it is fighting the elections on its own.

The Telugu Desam Party of N Chandrababu Naidu and the BJP firmed up an alliance after days of negotiations, overriding protests from local leaders. The YSR Congress of Jagan Reddy has fielded candidates in more than 100 assembly constituencies in Telangana, but is not expected to fare well after its strong opposition to bifurcation.

According to state chief electoral officer Bhanwarlal, polling will take place from 7 am to 6 pm except in 11 Maoist affected assembly constituencies where the polling will end at 4.

Malkajgiri and Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituencies have the highest number of candidates while there are only six contestants in Nagarkurnool.

Among assembly constituencies, Amberpet constituency in Hyderabad has 32 candidates while five each are contesting in Boath and Andole.

Telangana is witnessing a triangular contest involving the Congress, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Telugu Desam Party (TDP) combine.

The main fight is between the TRS and Congress. Though the YSR Congress party has fielded candidates in most places, the party doesn't seem to have much presence due to its opposition to Telangana.
