But with cases of COVID-19 on the rise in India, and WHO declaring it a pandemic there is no doubt we need to safeguard ourselves against infections. For this, it’s best to wash hands with soap and water regularly and avoid crowds. In addition, here are some home remedies traditional medicine practitioners recommend, to boost your immunity.

What Ayurveda says:
Valsala Varier, chief medical officer at Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal, Coimbatore, recommends three immunity-boosting drinks:

Boil a litre of water with 1 tablespoon of dried ginger, 4 teaspoons of coriander seeds and a fistful of fresh tulsi leaves. Strain it and drink

Mix one glass of milk with four glasses of water and add three cloves of garlic in it. Boil it till it is reduced to one glass. Strain it and and drink this instead of tea/coffee.

Add 1 teaspoon each of turmeric powder, asafoetida powder, fenugreek and fennel seeds with a few curry leaves to 500 ml of butter milk and warm it for five minutes. Drink twice or thrice daily.
Metabolism also plays an important role in our immunity, adds Varier. “Space your meals in such a way that the first one is completely digested by the time you have your second. Also make your dinner light, like a bowl of salad.” Another important measure is to get enough sleep and prepare the body for the next day. She suggests oil baths twice a week. “Add 100 gm of fenugreek seeds to a litre of oil and bring it to a boil. Once cooled, apply it all over your body and head. Let it soak into the skin for an hour before you bathe.”

Chaithrika GK, who practises Ayurveda at the Institute of Trans-Disciplinary Health Sciences and Technology, recommends this decotion:

Take 10-15 leaves of tulsi, 4-5 of parijata, 4-5 of neem, 6 of bael, and raw turmeric. Crush and boil the paste in one glass, or 250 ml of water, and reduce the solution to half. Add jaggery and cumin powder. Chaithrika recommends that you drink this after breakfast or lunch, and not on an empty stomach. “Having this decoction once a day for a week is enough. Don’t have it for long periods as it may be a burden on the liver.”

Siddha support:
Some of the easiest immunity boosters for internal use that Siddha suggests are also the quickest to make. For instance, J Jeyavenkatesh of Kokila Siddha Hospital & Research Centre, Madurai recommends that you heat four to five black pepper corns and one large betel leaf in one litre of water, until it boils. Filter it and drink it through the day. Or tweak your regular glass of butter milk by mixing the paste of 10 curry leaves in it.

The four most commonly available ingredients in any of our kitchens  ginger, garlic, turmeric and small onions can be added to bolster immunity. Add these to your chutneys, upma or rice.

Naturopathy talk:
Rukamani Nair, Bapu Nature Cure Hospital and Yogashram, suggests harvesting half a foot of giloy leaves and boiling it in two glasses of water until this reduces to one. Cool and drink a glass daily.

Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables from your region, as these are packed with the nutrients necessary for the weather.

Lemon juice is packed with vitamin C, but instead of overloading it with sugar, which diminishes immunity over a period, add a teaspoon of honey. If you have diabetes, add cinnamon.

Peanuts-For weight loss:
Peanuts are not low-calorie foods; however, eating them may actually be beneficial during weight loss.Peanuts are packed with nutrients, including fiber, protein and heart-healthy fats. Protein and fiber both help increase satiety, which makes it easier to control your overall calorie intake during weight loss.

Including peanuts in your diet can help you lose weight if you’re able to reduce your overall calorie intake or boost your daily caloric expenditure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests reducing your intake by 500 to 1,000 calories daily to shed about 1 to 2 pounds weekly. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute suggests many adults require 1,200 to 1,600 calories a day to effectively drop weight.

Peanuts can increase your metabolic rate. When researchers studied resting energy expenditure on peanut and peanut butter eaters, they found that it was 11 percent greater after regular peanut consumption for 19 weeks compared to the baseline.

The fat in peanuts (the "good fat") provides satiety and taste satisfaction, so you don't feel deprived.
Since peanuts stabilize your blood sugar with their low glycemic index (meaning they are digested more slowly and release sugar gradually into the bloodstream), they provide long-lasting energy and decrease cravings.

How to be a Confident Woman

Popcorn for weight loss:
You may be wondering if popcorn is a healthy snack if you're trying to lose weight. On one hand, it's high in fiber and low in calories compared to most snack foods.

The term "whole grain" may bring to mind loaves of bread flecked with bran or a bowl of oatmeal, but popcorn also counts. In fact, popcorn eaters get 250% more whole grains in their diet than people who don't eat popcorn. And like other whole grains, crunchy popcorn is high in fiber.

Not only is popcorn high in fiber, it even delivers some protein. A 1-ounce serving (about 3½ cups) has 4 grams of fiber, almost 4 grams of protein and clocks in at 110 calories. This combination makes it a snack with staying power.

It may be surprising, but popcorn is chock-full of polyphenols, the same compounds found in berries and tea that are linked to heart health and a lowered cancer risk.Popcorn is filled with air (think about how small the kernels are compared to after they're popped). Because it's airy, you get a pretty large portion without a lot of calories. You can eat 3 whole cups of popcorn for only 100 calories. So happily eat this snacks,And say goodbye to white rice, pasta, bread.

Green tea:
Not just flavored water, a green tea diet is full of health benefits. Steeping tea leaves in boiling water causes it to absorb their bioactive compounds. Rich in nutrients, green tea leaves contain anti-inflammatory and detoxifying compounds that help protect your body from the threat of free radicals.

However, the most profound benefit of green tea is the antioxidants (specifically catechins) it contains. EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is the most common catechin in green tea, and it is renowned for boosting the metabolism.

When it comes to enjoying green tea, how you brew it can make all the difference. Be careful not to overheat the water, as boiling will damage the catechins. For best results, bring water to a boil, but let it rest for ten minutes before pouring it over the tea. Then, pour it over the tea and let it brew for a minute before pulling out the leaves and serving them. Depending on your taste, this brew time can be made longer or shorter. Some types of green tea are better for weight loss than others. Matcha tends to be the most nutritious, as you dissolve and drink the tea leaves themselves, rather than just using them to infuse your water.

You can incorporate green tea into your diet at any time you would typically reach for a calorie-filled drink. Green tea makes a great substitute for sugary sodas and sweetened coffee drinks, and it only takes a few weeks for your taste buds to acclimate to the subtle natural sweetness it contains. In this way, you will make a difference for your weight loss routine by consuming fewer calories throughout the day, enjoy higher energy levels, and even boost your metabolism to burn the calories you do eat.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar that makes it great for weight loss.About 100 grams of apple cider vinegar has about 22 calories, which means it makes for a low-calorie drink that can help boost weight loss. Adding a tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar(ACV)into a glassful of water and drinking first thing in the morning may help burn belly fat.

Daily intake of apple cider vinegar might be useful in the prevention of metabolic syndrome by reducing obesity.

Apple cider vinegar leaves you feeling fuller for longer, thereby, preventing you from overeating or cravings. This will help you eat fewer calories and lead to actual kilos lost on the scale.
apple cider vinegar helps stabilise blood sugar levels, especially after eating a meal high in carbohydrates. Stabilised blood sugar levels are important to ensure a healthy and effective weight loss.

How to use apple cider vinegar for weight loss:
  • Never consume apple cider vinegar as it is; instead, dilute the solution in water to ensure you are not consuming large amount of acid.
  • You could use it as a salad dressing with olive oil to promote sustainable weight loss.
  • It is best to spread the consumption in two to three doses through the day and it is best to drink ACV before meals.
  • While occasional usage of apple cider vinegar may be safe, excessive usage may reverse the good effects as ACV is highly acidic. It may irritate your throat if you drink it often or in large amounts.
Some more tips :
  • Avoid junk food as much as possible. Products made with white flour (maida) are a strict no. Increase your fibre intake by consuming whole grain products. Avoiding chips and cookies is the key to reduce belly.
  • Little changes in your diet can go a long way in determining your waistline. For instance, switch whole milk for skimmed milk. Low-fat dairy products are also a great source of protein. Swap your ice cream sodas for lime water and buttermilk.
  • Instead of three heavy meals, take six small meals. Eat to satisfy your hunger, not your tongue. Know when you are full.
  • Keep a gap of two hours between your last meal and sleeping. Foods eaten close to bedtime get stored as fat.
  • If you want to reduce stomach, skipping your breakfast is a bad idea. It has been proved by studies that your body’s metabolism gets a jump-start with a balanced breakfast. When you skip meals, your body’s metabolism slows down which forces the body to break down muscle tissues for energy and conserve fat.
  • You can minimize your water retention by avoiding sodium intake i.e. your salt intake. For flavour, use other herbs and spices.
  • Starting your day with lemon juice is one of the best ways to lose belly fat. Squeeze a lime into a glass of warm water and add a pinch of salt to it. Drinking this beverage regularly every morning will not only eliminate your paunch but also boost your metabolism
  • Replace your white rice with wheat products, brown rice, brown bread, whole grains, oats, and quinoa are very good dietary alternatives.
  • When you want to lose fat from your midsection, you should keep your body hydrated. Drink sufficient amount of water to get rid of your belly fat at home. Drinking water removes toxins from your body, boosts metabolism and reduce stomach fat. Herbal tea is another tasty alternate. you can also drink green tea twice a day.
  • Chewing two or three cloves of garlic every morning with a glass of lemon water doubles up the weight loss process. It also ensures a smooth blood circulation in your body.
  • Include a lot of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Ingest a bowl of fresh fruits daily, every morning and evening to supply your body with various antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins.
  • Using lots of spices like cinnamon, ginger and black pepper in your daily meals help improves your insulin resistance and reduces sugar levels in your blood. They are also loaded with various other health benefits.

Summer Health Tips Summer Safety Tips

Summer Health Tips

Summer Health Tips

Its 40-50 degrees out there, and your skin seems to be sucking the heat in deeper into your body rather than helping you cool down. An occasional afternoon downpour brings more grief than relief for it layers on humidity that is thick enough to slice with a knife. Throw in a little pollution and each second becomes pure hell when you are outdoors.

The recently past heat wave seems to be consuming India and is probably indicative of an approaching hot summer, for brutal May, sizzling June and searing July and August are yet to come.

On sultry, humid days, muscles compete with the skin for blood circulation. When it's hot outside, more blood flows near the skin to help dissipate body heat and cool the body down thereby keeping your body's temperature from rising to dangerous levels. But that can mean less blood reaches muscles, hence the lethargy.

At the same time, as when your body becomes hotter, muscle enzymes speed up and burn glycogen more rapidly, depleting stores of the sugar that your muscles use for fuel. Hence it's imperative to drink plenty of fluids that would help hydrate your muscles and skin adequately in order to maintain internal cooling down.

Eat light, small, frequent meals. Start the morning with a sweet, juicy fruit at breakfast. Ripe summer fruits - peaches, plums, melons and pears, are exactly what your skin craves for in the hot season. Citrus fruits are also very cooling. Eat whole or extract their juice, store in the refrigerator and sip often throughout the day.

Include salads in your diet. Consuming leafy lettuce and summer greens, corn on cob and cucumbers, in salads are delicious ways to stay cool. These foods contain a significant amount of water and can actually thin the blood, which has a cooling effect. Onions too are great in the summer, because of their ability to beat the heat and provide relief from summer ailments. So, throw in some washed onion slices onto a sandwich, or in your salad.

If you get burnt (sun stroke or heat stroke), seek relief by sipping on green tea or take a spoon of onion juice. They are potent antioxidants that can neutralize cellular damage caused by the sun's rays.
To cool the body through sweating, add small amounts of hot spices to food while cooking. Hot peppers, fresh ginger, and black pepper are all great spices to make it really hot for you and then to cool you down.

Hydrate your body. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Water is the best drink as it doesn't contain any sugars that can add up to unnecessary calories. For a change, a lemon and honey drink can also instantly replenish your body's lost fluids and work as an energizer. Drink fluids even if you are not yet thirsty. Once you have the feeling of being thirsty means you are already dehydrated.
Wear loose, full-sleeved cotton clothes to protect the body from the sun and to aid evaporation of sweat. Use a hat to protect your head from the sun you go out

Stay indoors. Restrict outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day - early mornings before 10.30am or late evenings after 5.30pm

If you're a non-vegetarian, you should limit red meat and instead go for fish and oysters.
Avoid extreme cold foods and drinks - most of us normally pick these and they are actually known to interfere with digestion and sweating, thereby interfering with the body's natural cooling mechanisms.

So, however tempting it may be to sit on your porch licking an ice cream cone or sipping a cool glass of tea, try a wedge of watermelon instead. As the mercury rises, the last thing on one's mind is food - but if you eat smart, small & light meals and accompany it with plenty of fluids you will be a cool winner. But remember the best place to start the cooling process is in your body's core.

Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.

Don’t drink liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar–these actually cause you to lose more body fluid.

Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.

Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
Although any one at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others—infants, young children, people age 65 and over, people who have a mental illness, and people with health conditions such as heart disease or high blood pressure.
Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.
  • Wash hands with hot, soapy water before and after handling food.
  • Keep food and drinks in separate coolers.
  • Never leave perishable food out of the refrigerator for more than two hours. When the air temperature is above 90 °, do not leave food out for more than one hour.
  • Use clean utensils and dishes to serve food. Each dish should have its own serving utensils to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Preheat cooking grills for 20-30 minutes before using.
  • Allow meat to completely thaw in a refrigerator before placing on a grill.
  • Marinate meat in a tightly sealed plastic container or sealable plastic bag, and keep refrigerated until ready to use. Do not reuse marinade.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure meats have reached a safe, internal temperature: hamburger-160°; chicken-165°; pork-150°; steak-145°; hot dogs-140°.
  • Serve grilled foods on a clean dish, not a dish used for raw meat.
  • Leftovers should be refrigerated or placed in a cooler within one hour after use.
  • Carry picnic food in a cooler with a cold pack. Remember, a full cooler stays cool longer than a half empty one.
  • Always take along some foods that don't require refrigeration.
  • A cooler will stay colder if it is kept inside the car and not in the trunk.
  • Keep coolers in the shade with the lid closed.
  • Bring along alcohol-based sanitizers or disposable wipes to keep hands clean.
  • When applying insect repellant, spray it away from food areas.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water and when applicable, remove outer leaves or skin.
  • Always assume that lake, pond, stream and river waters are not safe to drink. Take bottled water to drink.
  • Place all trash in nearby receptacles or bring it home with you for disposal.

Homemade Remedies for Acidity Natural Cure for Acidity Health Tips

Homemade Remedies for Acidity

Acidity occurs when there is excess secretion of acids in the gastric glands of the stomach. When the secretion is more than usual, we feel, what is commonly known as heartburn, which is normally triggered off by consumption of spicy foods.

The human stomach is filled with a naturally-produced acidic liquid that activates digestive enzymes that will break down wide variety of consumed foods. However, excess stomach acid can cause severe problems and painful symptoms. The most common symptom associated with excess stomach acid is heartburn.

Excess acid leaks into the esophagus and causes a burning sensation near where the heart is located. A good way to get rid of this excess acid is by not eating spicy food. Spicy food can cause tissue inflammation. Consistent heartburn and acid reflux can cause severe damage to the sensitive tissue of the esophagus and throat. Dealing with excess stomach acid is possible and individuals can follow some basic steps to help regulate the pH levels of their stomach contents.

Home Remedies to Cure Acidity

Understand the causes of excess stomach acid. This is an important first step to complete before you attempt to regulate the acidity of your stomach by using natural methods or over the counter medication.

Often, a lifestyle change can be enough to restore the proper acid levels in the stomach.Dehydration is one of the leading causes of excess stomach acid.Water has a neutral pH, meaning it is neither an acid nor a base. When your body has sufficient amounts of water, it can naturally regulate the acidity of the stomach content.

Unnatural or forced losses of fluids can contribute to excess stomach acid. Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia can therefore also contribute to excess stomach acid buildup. When the body does not receive enough food or is forced to regurgitate ingested food, stomach acid can increase. Altering your lifestyle to deal with these issues is an effective way to combat excess stomach acid.

Note the possible symptoms associated with excess stomach acid
.Knowledge of the symptoms of an acidic stomach will help you identify whether the pH of your stomach is the culprit behind your symptoms.
Possible symptoms of excess stomach acid include heartburn, bloating, excess gas, indigestion, nausea, fullness or the presence of ulcers.

Other symptoms may include bad breath, hair loss, belching or nasal congestion.
All of these symptoms may be indications that the stomach acid of your stomach is disproportionate and should be regulated.
Understand the contributing factors to excess stomach acid. The foods that you eat can increase stomach acid levels if the food is difficult to digest or highly acidic in content. Spicy foods and salty foods can also contribute to excess stomach acid buildup.
Eliminate bad habits related to your health which can contribute to excess stomach acid buildup.
Refraining from smoking, which can cause buildup of stomach acids and raise the acidic content of the stomach. This can result in prolonged heartburn and other stomach problems.

Refraining from or reducing alcohol consumption, which can also increase the acidic content of the stomach and lead to stomach acid issues and symptoms.

Consume meals on a regular basis and try to eat a wide balance of healthy food items instead of junk food or foods with high sugar and salt contents.Foods that are high in fiber can help to regulate the digestive system and may decrease stomach acid levels.

Drink a glass of whole milk to help combat the effects of excess stomach acid. For individuals who have only the occasional occurrence of excess stomach acid, a glass of milk may help to absorb the excess acid and reduce the symptoms of increased stomach acid levels.

Chew mint to soothe the acidic content of the stomach and help promote effective digestion and decreased symptoms associated with acid buildup.

Eat meals slowly to avoid ingesting excess air. When the stomach fills with air, uncomfortable bloating and pressure can occur. When this air is expelled through belching, it may carry excess stomach acid into the esophagus and cause a burning sensation. By eating and drinking slowly, you can reduce the amount of air that is swallowed while eating.

Avoid eating very large meals. Over-eating to "very full" makes the stomach pump out even more acid to digest all that food, and because the stomach is full, acid has an even better chance of splashing up on the esophagus.

By eating slower in the previous tip, you'll recognize you are "actually full" sooner than you would be if you "ate until you were full."

Avoid carbonated beverages and legumes which can also increase the amount of gas produced in the stomach. Increased gas levels may not contribute to acid overload, but this gas can deliver the acid to parts of the body that are sensitive to the high acidity of stomach fluids.

Engage in relaxation techniques and stress relieving activities. Elevated stress levels can trigger an increase in stomach acid production. Ulcers, sores and lesions on the inner lining of the stomach and esophagus are often attributed to high stress levels.

Exercise regularly. Exercise is important for maintaining overall body health and will contribute to easing symptoms of indigestion, especially as a source of reducing stress buildup. Be sure to keep well hydrated when exercising.

Some Home Remedies to Cure Acidity:

Bananas: Are high in potassium which is an alkalizing mineral that has a high pH value. The higher the pH value, the lower the acidity, which is why the banana is a formidable antidote for acidity. They also have a component that makes the stomach lining produce more mucous. This mucous protects the inner lining of the stomach, reducing the damage caused due to acidity. It is high in fibre content, which helps speed along digestion thus reducing the further recurrence of acidity. To make this remedy even more effective try and eat overripe bananas during an attack of acidity. They have higher amounts of potassium making it even more effective.

Tulsi: Has compounds that make it an effective digestive agent. It stimulates the stomach to produce more mucous and has potent anti-ulcer properties. It also reduces the effect of peptic acids in the stomach thereby preventing excessive acidity. They also reduce gas formation. Eat five to six basil leaves after your meal to get instant relief.

Cold milk:
Milk has a high amount of calcium that helps it prevent acid build up and absorbs the excess acidproduced thereby reducing the symptoms; the fact that it is cold also provides instant relief from the burning sensation one feels during acid reflux. It is essential that one has this cold and without any additives like sugar. Mix it with a spoon of ghee to make the remedy even more effective.

Saunf: Called fennel in English and popularly used as a mouth freshener, saunf has many hidden benefits. Among them are aiding digestion reliving constipation. Rich in volatile oils containing flavanoids, plamitic acid and many others, it is known to have very potent anti-ulcer properties.Apart from that saunf acts as a coolant for the lining of the stomach helping it heal faster. In fact, this is why saunf is served after meals at restaurants. In case you’ve a sudden bout of acidity, boil a few seeds in water and leave overnight, drink this water when you feel uneasy.

Jeera: It has properties that stimulate the production of saliva which helps in better digestion, improves metabolism and relieves gas and other gastric troubles . In Ayurvedic traditions, it’s believed to have a calming effect on irritated stomach nerves and helps in healing ulcers formed due to acid secretion. One can either chew on it to relieve acidity or a better method is to boil it in water and drink the water when it has cooled down.

Clove: It is a natural carmitive and helps improve peristalisis (the movement of food down the stomach) and also increase the production of saliva. It has a pungent taste when bitten into, and the taste buds react to this taste and secrete excess saliva, which in turn aids digestion. In case you’re suffering from acidity, bite a clove once so that the juice is released and then keep it in the mouth. The slowly escaping juice will immediately lower acid reflux and give you some relief.

Elaichi: In Ayurvedic traditions, cardamom is believed to be one food that balances all three doshas – kapha, pitta and vata. It is known to stimulate digestion and relieve people of stomach spasms. It soothes the mucous lining of the stomach helping it ward off the effects of excess acid produced in the stomach. Due to its sweet taste and slight cooling effect it also relieves the burning sensation associated with acidity. To relieve acidity crush two pods of cardamom (with or without the skin), boil the powder in water and drink the cooled juice for instant relief.

Mint leaves or pudina:
These leaves have been used for ages as a mouth freshener and also for garnishing for various foods. This humble leaf has amazing properties that make it just the medicine to treat acidity. It also lowers the acid content of the stomach and improves digestion. Plus its cool effect helps to reduce the pain and burning associated with acid reflux. If you feel an attack coming on chop some mint leaves, add them to a pot of boiling water and drink this water after it cools.

Nobody likes bitter things. But isn't it better to take a fruit or a vegetable instead of medicines? Having bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach has proved to prevent diabetes. If you are too stubborn or enjoy eating bitter gourd, then you could make stuffed karela (bitter bourd) or fry them like chips and have them as a snack. This will not just bring a change in your menu and give a respite to your taste buds, but also be beneficial to your health.

Fig Leaves- Figs leaves are very commonly used in treating diabetes. They are believed to have anti-diabetic properties that help them to reduce the sugar levels in the blood. Fig leaves can be directly chewed on an empty stomach, or the leaves can be boiled in water and the water can be drunk like tea. Done on a regular basis, the need for insulin gets reduced.

Fenugreek- Fenugreek seeds are rich in sugar-lowering properties. Even the leaves of this plant can be made as curry and consumed regularly. Fenugreek helps to reduce the insulin dependency when taken in regular intervals. A teaspoon-full of seeds should be soaked in a glass of water over night and the water along with the seeds should be drunk on empty stomach. No foods or medications should be taken for the next 30 minutes after consuming the water. This treatment is recommended for 2 – 3 times per week.

Cinnamon- Cinnamon is the common spice used in every Indian cooking. The taste and the aroma enhancer also has beneficial anti-diabetic properties where it is believed to have the same properties like insulin in lowering the blood glucose level. It is recommended to take half spoon of cinnamon powder everyday to get the desired effect. It can also be chewed in its natural form instead of being made into a powder.

Grape Seed Extract- Grape seeds are a rich source of vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid and oligomeric proanthocyanidins. Recent studies have proved their efficacy in treating diabetes. The grape seeds are ground and placed in capsules; the person can take up to 300mg per day to reduce the blood sugar levels.

Olive Oil- Olive oil is believed to have beneficiary effects such as reducing the cholesterol and triglycerides level in the blood. It also helps to reduce blood sugar level. Cooking all foods with edible olive oil brings about this effect on the long run.

Bitter Melon / Bitter Gourd- Bitter gourd is an ancient remedy to treat diabetes at home. It can be taken in the form of juice, or cooked and fried and consumed with food daily. Many prefer drinking the stock after boiling the bitter gourd. The best effects can be gained when taken on empty stomach every morning. Be cautious while taking bitter gourd as it can even lead to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels.

Vitamin C- Wondering why vitamin C is used for diabetes? Recent researches have found that consuming up to 600mg of vitamin C daily can help to normalize the blood glucose levels. Foods rich in vitamin C should be consumed daily by chronic diabetics.

Garlic- This is a common Indian herb known to every Indian family that is extensively used in everyday cooking. Everyone is aware of the cholesterol-reducing effect of garlic; few people know about its anti-diabetic effect. The chemical Allicin in garlic is believed to have hypoglycemic effects.

Aloe Vera- This is a very common plant grown in most households. It has varied benefits and uses for the human body. Widely used for the cosmetic property, it also has hypoglycemic characteristics. It has a slight bitter taste, yet has proven to reduce the sugar levels. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that promote wound healing. It is best taken with buttermilk to improve the taste.

Neem- Neem, a tree that is believed to have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal property, has anti-diabetic properties as well. It has been found to reduce insulin requirements by up to 50%.

Indian Gooseberry- The common man’s fruit that is rich in vitamin C also has hypoglycemic properties. The fruit when taken orally helps to reduce the sugar level by stimulating insulin production within 30 minutes of consumption. The seeds of this fruit are also taken in ground and powdered form, which has much slower effect in reducing the blood glucose levels.

Mango- The leaves of the mango tree are believed to have anti-diabetic properties. The leaf extracts need to be administered at least 60 minutes before food consumption then only the desired effect can be seen. It helps to reduce the intestinal glucose absorption, which is the reason behind its anti-diabetic effect.

Holy Basil- This is a medicinal plant, which is also considered holy by many Indians right from ancient times. It is recommended to extract the juice from the leaves and consume it. A daily habit of eating fresh leaves from the garden after washing has tremendous effects on the body. Basil leaves bring about a significant reduction in the blood glucose level. Apart from that, this leaf also has anti-stress, anti-asthmatic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, gastric anti-ulcer, anti-oxidant, anti-viral, anti-tumor, anti-mutagenic and immuno-stimulant properties.

Lady's Finger- This most sought out vegetable is rich in soluble fibers. It helps to slow down the absorption of glucose from the intestine. Soak one lady's finger slit in the middle in a glass of water overnight and consume it on an empty stomach. Done over a month, it reduces the blood glucose level to a great extent.

Beans- Beans help to slow down the digestion process thereby preventing the rise in blood glucose level. Beans give a feeling of fullness to the stomach and satiety is reached early.

Soy- Soy is a blessing for those having unmanageable chronic diabetes. Soy contains isoflavones that help to reduce blood sugar levels while keeping the body well nourished. It also prevents the accumulation of fat as it gives very little calories. It is ideal for weight reduction program too.

Jamun- This is a seasonal berry that is not available all through the year. The leaves of the Jamun tree are useful in reducing the sugar levels. 100 grams of this fruit consumed per day can do wonders to the blood glucose levels. Caution – many tend to develop sore throat after consuming Jamun.

Vinegar- Many may not include vinegar in their regular diet. But this again helps diabetics to reduce the sugar concentration in the blood. Add vinegar to foods that can be palatable with this ingredient. Two spoons of vinegar before food helps in the reduction of glucose influx.

Oysters- Oysters may have no direct effect in reducing the blood glucose level. But, as a rich source of zinc, they help to promote wound healing in diabetics. Thus, it is advisable for diabetics to include oysters in their diet for better wound healing capability.

Papaya- It is recommended to consume papaya on a daily basis as it has natural blood sugar controlling capability that helps to control diabetes by and large. It is also a rich source of vitamin C and anti-oxidants along with carotenes and flavonoids.

Holy Basil LeavesAlso known as tulsi, leaves of holy basil are packed with antioxidants and essential oils that produce eugenol, methyl eugenol and caryophyllene. Collectively these substances help the pancreatic beta cells (cells that store and release insulin) function properly. This in turn helps increase sensitivity to insulin. An added advantage is that the antioxidants present in the leaves help beat the ill effects of oxidative stress.Have two to three tulsi leaves whole, or about one tablespoon full of its juice on an empty stomach to lower the blood sugar levels.

Flax Seeds: Due to their high fibre content flaxseeds help digestion and aid in the proper absorption of fats and sugars. Consuming flax seed helps reduce a diabetic’s postprandial sugar level by almost 28 per cent.

Leaves of bilberry plant:
Also called the neelabadari plant, it has been used in Ayurveda for many centuries to control diabetes. Recently the Journal of Nutrition stated that the leaves of the Bilberry plant contain high amounts of anthocyanidin, which enhance the action of various proteins involved in glucose transportation and fat metabolism. Due to this unique property, bilberry leaves are a great way to lower one’s blood sugar levels.

Drumstick leaves: Also called moringa, the leaves of this plant are best known for their ability to boost one’s energy. In the case of diabetics, the moringa leaf increases satiety and slows the breakdown of food and lower blood pressure.

Isabgol: Also known as psyllium husk is often used as a laxative. When isabgol comes in contact with water, it swells to form a gel-like substance. This slows the breakdown and absorption of blood glucose. Isabgol also protects the stomach lining from ulcers and acidity.

Green Tea: Unlike other tea leaves, green tea is unfermented and is high in polyphenol content. Polyphenol is a strong antioxidant and hypo-glycaemic compound that helps control the release of blood sugars and helps the body use insulin better

Neem: Found abundantly in India, the bitter leaf has a number of amazing medicinal properties. Neem enhances insulin receptor sensitivity, helps improve blood circulation by dilating the blood vessels, lowers blood glucose levels and reduces one’s dependence on hypoglycaemic drugs

 Health Benefits of Banana

Banana is very much a staple fruit of India. One of the great things about bananas is that it is not only delicious but is also cheap and available throughout the year unlike the other fruits.
Bananas are a caloric dense fruit. Consumption of just one banana anytime through the day makes one feel energetic.

Creamy, rich, and sweet, bananas are a favorite food for everyone from infants to elders. Sports enthusiasts appreciate the potassium-power delivered by this high energy fruit.

Blood pressure: Maintaining a low sodium intake is essential to lowering blood pressure, however increasing potassium intake may be just as important because of its vasodilation effects. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, fewer than 2% of US adults meet the daily 4700 mg recommendation.A high potassium intake is associated with a 20% decreased risk of dying from all causes.

Asthma: A study conducted by the Imperial College of London found that children who ate just one banana per day had a 34% less chance of developing asthma.

Cancer: Consuming bananas, oranges and orange juice in the first two years of life may reduce the risk of developing childhood leukemia. As a good source of vitamin C, bananas can help combat the formation of free radicals known to cause cancer. High fiber intakes from fruits and vegetables like bananas are associated with a lowered risk of colorectal cancer.

Heart health: The fiber, potassium, vitamin C and B6 content in bananas all support heart health. An increase in potassium intake along with a decrease in sodium intake is the most important dietary change that a person can make to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.

In one study, those who consumed 4069 mg of potassium per day had a 49% lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease compared with those who consumed less potassium (about 1000 mg per day).
High potassium intakes are also associated with a reduced risk of stroke, protection against loss of muscle mass, preservation of bone mineral density and reduction in the formation of kidney stones.

Diabetes: Studies have shown that type 1 diabetics who consume high-fiber diets have lower blood glucose levels and type 2 diabetics may have improved blood sugar, lipids and insulin levels. One medium banana provides about 3 grams of fiber. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends 21-25 g/day for women and 30-38 g/day for men.

Treating diarrhea: Bland foods such as apple sauce and bananas are recommended for diarrhea treatment. Electrolytes like potassium are lost in large quantities during bouts of diarrhea and may make those affected feel weak. Bananas can help to promote regularity and replenish potassium stores.

Preserving memory and boosting mood: Bananas also contain tryptophan, an amino acid that studies suggest plays a role in preserving memory and boosting your mood.

Build Better Bones with Bananas:Bananas can help improve your body's ability to absorb calcium via several mechanisms.Bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound called a prebiotic because it nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. These beneficial bacteria produce vitamins and digestive enzymes that improve our ability to absorb nutrients, plus compounds that protect us against unfriendly microorganisms. When fructooligosaccharides are fermented by these friendly bacteria, not only do numbers of probiotic bacteria increase, but so does the body's ability to absorb calcium. In addition, gastrointestinal transit time is lessened, decreasing the risk of colon cancer.

Bananas are also known to stimulate cell proliferation which thickens the stomach mucosa and is a barrier against stomach acids.

Banana is a food most appropriate when small but nutrient dense food has to be given in situations of extreme weight loss or extreme fever where the body becomes weak and there is food aversion.
So, have Banana daily.

Carrots:

Carrots are often thought of as the ultimate health food. You were probably told to "eat your carrots" by your parents and you probably tell your kids the same thing, and when asked why, you explain, "Because they're good for you!"

But how did the carrot get such a good reputation and why exactly are the root vegetables so good for our health?

It is believed that the carrot was first cultivated in the area now known as Afghanistan thousands of years ago as a small forked purple or yellow root with a woody and bitter flavor, resembling nothing of the carrot we know today.

Purple, red, yellow and white carrots were cultivated long before the appearance of the now popular orange carrot, which was developed and stabilized by Dutch growers in the 16th and 17th centuries.

A 1-cup serving of chopped carrots contains 3.6 grams of dietary fiber, which is a good start toward getting the 21 to 25 grams women should aim for each day and the 30 to 38 grams men should consume on a daily.

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, providing 210% of the average adult's needs for the day. They also provide 6% of vitamin C needs, 2% of calcium needs and 2% of iron needs per serving. It is the antioxidant beta-carotene that gives carrots their bright orange color. Beta-carotene is absorbed in the intestine and converted into vitamin A during digestion.Carrots also contain fiber, vitamin K, potassium, folate, manganese, phosphorous, magnesium, vitamin E and zinc.

An overwhelming body of evidence exists suggesting that increased intake of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables reduce cancer and cardiovascular disease risks, carrots included.

Cancer: A variety of dietary carotenoids have been shown to have anti-cancer effects due to their antioxidant power in reducing free radicals in the body.
Lung Cancer: One study found that current smokers who did not consume carrots had three times the risk of developing lung cancer compared with those who ate carrots more than once a week.
Colorectal Cancer: Beta-carotene consumption has been shown to have an inverse association with the development of colon cancer in the Japanese population.
Leukemia: Carrot juice extract was shown to kill leukemia cells and inhibit their progression in a 2011 study.
Prostate Cancer: Among younger men, diets rich in beta-carotene may play a protective role against prostate cancer, according to a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health's Department of Nutrition.
Vision: According to Duke ophthalmologist Jill Koury, MD, vitamin A deficiency causes the outer segments of the eye's photoreceptors to deteriorate, damaging normal vision. Correcting vitamin A deficiencies with foods high in beta-carotene will restore vision.

Tomato:

Whether you refer to a tomato as a fruit or a vegetable, there is no doubt that a tomato is a nutrient-dense, super-food that most people should be eating more.

The tomato has been referred to as a "functional food," a food that goes beyond providing just basic nutrition, additionally preventing chronic disease and delivering other health benefits, due to beneficial phytochemicals such as lycopene.

Despite the popularity of the tomato, only 200 years ago it was thought to be poisonous in the U.S., likely because the plant belongs to the nightshade family, of which some species are truly poisonous.

One medium tomato provides 22 calories, 0 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbohydrate (including 1 gram of fiber and 3 grams of sugar) and 1 gram of protein. Tomatoes are a rich source of vitamins A and C and folic acid. Tomatoes contain a wide array of beneficial nutrients and antioxidants, including alpha-lipoic acid, lycopene, choline, folic acid, beta-carotene and lutein.

The benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables of all kinds, including tomatoes, are infinite. As plant food consumption goes up, the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer goes down. High fruit and vegetable intake is also associated with healthy skin and hair, increased energy and lower weight. Increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables significantly decreases the risk of obesity and overall mortality.

Cancer: As an excellent source of the strong antioxidant vitamin C and other antioxidants, tomatoes can help combat the formation of free radicals known to cause cancer.

Prostate Cancer: Lycopene has been linked with prostate cancer prevention in several studies.According to John Erdman, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of the department of food science and human nutrition at the University of Illinois, "There's very good, strong, epidemiological support for increased consumption of tomato products and lower incidence of prostate cancer."Among younger men, diets rich in beta-carotene may play a protective role against prostate cancer, according to a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health's Department of Nutrition.

Colorectal Cancer: Beta-carotene consumption has been shown to have an inverse association with the development of colon cancer in the Japanese population. High fiber intakes from fruits and vegetables are associated with a lowered risk of colorectal cancer.

  • Tomatoes work against impotency and help increase the sperm count.
  • Tomatoes are powerful blood purifiers and clear up urinary tract infections.
  • They have anti oxidant properties as they are high sources of vitamin C and vitamin A. The Vitamin A especially wards off macular degeneration and improves eyesight.
  • A person who drinks 8 ounces of low sodium tomato juice a day, can prevent inflammatory diseases like osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s. High in fiber they are freely used by weight watchers.
  • They are good for improving skin porosity and are widely used in the manufacture of skin care and beauty products.
Heart health: The fiber, potassium, vitamin C and choline content in tomatoes all support heart health. An increase in potassium intake along with a decrease in sodium intake is the most important dietary change that a person can make to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease

Pregnancy: Adequate folic acid intake is essential for pregnant women to protect against neural tube defects in infants.

Diabetes: Studies have shown that type 1 diabetics who consume high-fiber diets have lower blood glucose levels and type 2 diabetics may have improved blood sugar, lipids and insulin levels. One cup of cherry tomatoes provides about 2 grams of fiber.

Walnuts:

Walnuts are high in protein, vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, trace minerals, lecithin and oils. Compared with other nuts, which typically contain a high amount of monounsaturated fats, walnuts are unique because the fats in them are primarily polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and are the only nut with a significant amount of alpha-linolenic acid. Moreover, walnuts have insignificant amounts of sodium and are cholesterol free.

Walnuts as Brain Food: Walnuts have potential health benefits in the area of memory and cognitive function as well. Low omega 3 intake has been linked to depression and decline in cognitive function. And taking into consideration that walnut is a rich source of ALA (omega 3), it no doubt promotes brain health. Studies however show that only moderate amount of walnut (2 or 6 percent of a healthy diet) can improve motor and behavioral skills in older adults and higher amounts, say 9 percent, impaired reference memory.

Walnuts for Hair - Walnut is a good ‘hair food’ too. This is because walnut contains biotin (vitamin B7) that helps strengthen hair, reduce hair fall and improve hair growth to certain extent.

Omega 3 in Walnuts: Omega 3 and Omega 6 are two essential fatty acids required by our body for cell growth, immune function, blood clotting and disease prevention, but our body cannot make them on their own. So these fatty acids have to be obtained from our diet.
Walnuts in Pregnancy - Although not much research has gone into the safety and benefits of consuming walnut during pregnancy, it is believed that walnut may stave off nausea during pregnancy and boost brain development in the child.

Walnuts to Prevent Cancer - Walnuts contain multiple ingredients that, individually, have been shown to slow cancer growth, including omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and phytosterols. Consuming walnuts regularly could even reduce the risk for breast cancer.

Prevents diabetes
According to a study, women who consumed 28 grams of walnuts twice a week, were 24% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Beans:

The old children's rhyme was right: beans are good for your heart. So are lentils and other nutritious legumes, which are great sources of vegetarian protein and high-quality carbohydrates.

Beans, lentils and other nutritious legumes are the best sources of lean vegetarian protein. Legumes are made up of high-quality carbohydrates that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They tend to be notably high in soluble fiber, folate, magnesium, iron, and potassium. These heart-healthy nutrients help lower cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure, and they can reduce your risk of coronary artery disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Soluble fiber, in particular, keeps you feeling fuller for longer, so it’s a good tool for weight loss.

Pregnancy:Folate, a vitamin very important for pregnant women and their unborn babies, is found in beans. During pregnancy, women need more folate. Expectant mothers who consume enough of the right nutrients can help reduce the risk of birth defects.
Weight Management:Beans are naturally low in fat, an excellent source of fiber, and a good source of protein. Research shows that people who eat more fiber tend to weigh less. Protein helps you feel full and promotes muscle building.
People For food allergies and intolerance:
Beans are especially important for people with certain food allergies and intolerances. For example, some people can’t tolerate gluten, a natural protein present in wheat, barley and rye. Because beans don’t contain gluten, or major allergens found in various grains, substituting beans can help provide the fiber and other nutrients that people on restricted diets may be missing.
Beanes for blood sugar management:
Beans boast a low glycemic index and contain complex carbohydrates, which are digested slowly. These facts make beans a good choice for people needing to keep their blood sugar in the normal range.
