Surya Ashtakam Lyrics

The power derived from the Sun is called solar energy, and we all know that it is renewable. Therefore, it wouldn't be wrong to say that the Sun is eternal, and the benefits obtained from it is perennial. Interestingly, Hindus believe that the Sun is one of the manifestations of God and the only deity who can be seen. Therefore, Surya Dev holds an essential place in the life of a Hindu.

Many devotees routinely offer water to the Sun God in the morning. They would also pray for their well-being while offering the water from a Kalash. This is a gesture to express gratitude and also thank the Sun God for showering the earth with his comforting rays. Can you imagine life on earth without the Sun? The planet will doom in darkness and turn into a ball of snow. And hence, the significance.

Therefore, for life to sustain and prosper, the earth needs the blessings of Surya Dev.

Below the Mantras that you can chant every day to invoke Surya Dev.

Sahyamala Dandakam

Sahyamala Dandakam Lyrics With Meaning

Shyamala Dandakam is for all I know the greatest stotra written by Maha Kavi Kalidasa sing the praises of the Mother Goddess - Shyamala. He has employed a poetic style called Dandakam in writing this prayer. Dandakam is a poetry where some of the lines have more than 26 syllables. It very much resembles prose. In this case, the entire Dandakam is a single sentence from start to the end.

Kalidasa was one of the great Sanskrit poets. He wrote many great play like Shakunthalam and great epics like Kumara Sambhavam, Malavikagni mithram, the message poetry called Megha Sandesham etc. He is extremely famous for the use of appropriate similes and metaphors. Shyamala Dandakam is perhaps the greatest stotra written by him eulogizing the mother goddess Shyamala.

It is estimated that he lived between the 4th and 5th century AD. His biography provides loads of details about his life style and the places he travelled. He wrote epic poems in classical Sanskrit to be utilized for fine arts like dance and music. He stayed at Chandragupta’s palace in Pataliputra (today called Patna). Legends hold that Kalidasa was good-looking, and one of the “nine gems’ in Chandragupta’s court.

There is a folk story about how he came about to write this stotra. He was afoolish wood cutter. The courtiers of a proud princess made him act asa wise man and made the princess marry him. A Great Sage advised the wood cutter to enter in to a temple of Mother Goddess Bhadra Kaali, when she goes out for a walk and lock himself in. When Kali came back, the wood cutter refused to allow her in, unless she makes him wise. She did that. Shyamala Dandakam is supposed to be the first prayer of this wood cutter to Mother Goddess Kaali after he became wise .

The Stotram in Telugu

The Story of Goddess Shri Garbhrakshambika Sage Nithuvar and his wife Vedhika were living in this forest which was full of Jasmine flowers when the following incident happened which lead Parvathi devi to take the avatar of Garbarakshambika to give special protection to women during pregnancy.
In the ancient time, two Rishies ( saints ) Gowthama and Gargeya did penance in this garden of Jasmine flowers where the ashram was situated.
The story is that, Sage Nithuvar was living here with his wife Vedhika. One day when Sage Nithuvar was away, sage Urdhvapada a very angry sage visited their hermitage for alms. Vedhika was tired and sleeping deeply without showing hospitality to the sage..infact she was having pains due to pregnancy but Urdhvapada unaware of her difficulties got angry that she din’t bother to wake up and felt she could be sleeping purposely , decided to curse her .The curse made her get diseased and it also hurted the child in her womb.Vedhika was in worst pain of her life and deeply hurted that her own child is being gradually destroyed and prayed for to Goddess Parvathi to help her ….Goddess parvathi took the avatar of Garbarakshambika and appeared before Vedhika and protected her child in the womb by holding it in a “kalasam ” – divine pot..The goddess has helped the child grow in the divine pot untill it grew as full fledged child. .. here goddess herself has saved a womens pregnancy and blessed her.
When Vedhika cried as she was not able to feed the baby with her milk, A sacred cow came infront of the temple and made a lake of sacred milk. .
Vedhikai prayed to Goddess Garbarakshambika to remain in the temple forever and bless all women with good soul mate, child birth hand safe pregnancy.
Meaning of the name Garbarakshambika :
The name of the goddess carried the beautiful meaning in itself…Garba means Pregnancy, Raksha means “To protect ” and Ambika is one of the names of Parvathi devi .so she is all about protecting a womens life blessing her with a kind hearted husband,a good child and a happy family.
श्री गर्भ रक्षाअम्बिका मंत्र
ॐ गर्भरक्षाम्बिकायै च विद्महे मंगल देवदायै च धीमहि
तन्नो देवी प्रचोदयत ।

This prayer is addressed to the five weapons of Lord Vishnu viz:
Holy wheel (Sudarshana),
Conch (Pancha Janya),
Mace(Gomodhakee),
Sword and
Bow(Sarngam).
They are considered to be great sages in the service of Lord Vishnu.

Sudarshana the holy wheel was made by Viswakarma out of the dust from the sawing of the Sun, which was done to reduce his harshness. This became necessary because Viswakarma’s daughter was married to Lord Vishnu.

His conch is Pancha janya. There was an Asura called Panchaja who was hiding himself in a conch. This asura abducted the son of the teacher of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna waged a war against Panchaja and killed him. He retained the conch for his use. The other orgin of this conch is that it was one of the byproducts of churning the milky ocean.

His mace was made out of the bone of one Rakshasa called Gadha who was the son of sage Kashyapa. It was made by Viswakarma and presented to Lord Vishnu.

His bow Sarnga was supposed to be made by God Brahma and presented to Lord Vishnu.
